Food and Cooking

Food lessons aim to allow pupils to develop practical food skills with the emphasis on food hygiene and safety, whilst also promoting enjoyment of cooking and preparing food.  Lessons enable pupils to:

  • Develop their practical cooking skills
  • Use a variety of cooking equipment and utensils
  • Amend and adapt recipes
  • Practise their numeracy skills through food costing, measuing and adapting recipes
  • Develop an awareness of diferent cultures and cuisine
  • Develop reading, writing and oracy skills through research, discussion and theory tasks

 

 

     

    KS3

    During KS3 students will cook a range of meals and items using a number of techniques and apparatus.  Lessons include

    • Topical learning such as Lunar New Year, religious events and seasonal activities
    • Health and Safety in the kitchen, including knife skills and hazards in the classroom
    • The Eatwell Guide
    • Nutrtion
    • Food miles and the origin of food items
    • Careers and job roles related to the kitchen or food preparation
    • Cooking techniques

     

    KS4

    During KS4 students will meet the critera requried of the BTEC Level 1 unit HT5: Preparing and Cooking Food and on completion of appropriate tasks will be offered the opportunity to complete a final assessment in year 11.  During this assessment students will be expected to plan, cost and create a dish to suit the needs of a given scenario.  Successful students may use this unit for acredititation towards the BTEC Level 1 Award in Hospitality and Tourism, or the BTEC Level 1 Award in Vocational Studies.
